Defining Boundaries

Retha Millikan, LMFT and Boundary CounselingI have led many groups and taught classes on the Cloud and Townsend book on Boundaries. I think it can be helpful for nearly everyone. It is all about how to know who you are, when to say “yes”, and when to say “no”, to take control of your life. It is about being authentic so that you can use your gifts and talents to both help others and live a full and meaningful life for the right reasons. Some of the topics covered are…
  • What is a boundary?
  • How Boundaries are developed
  • Misconceptions about Boundaries
  • Concepts that govern them
  • Living authentically
  • Spiritual ramifications
  • Boundaries with family and friends
  • I teach these concepts with individual therapy, group counseling, and in church or school settings. Email me if this sounds like a topic you would like to pursue.

My Therapy Style

Although I am primarily a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist, I have studied an eclectic set of counseling theories that I can use, depending on each client’s needs. Some of these include a family systems approach, play therapy for kids, art therapy, and attachment theory.

You will find that I am a directive therapist. Although I will spend a lot of time listening, I believe in a collaborative approach that involves some education, some minor homework to keep the momentum going between sessions, and a commitment on your part to do the work of changing whatever you want to change.
I am constantly reading, consulting with colleagues, attending seminars, and learning new techniques in my effort to help my clients achieve the goals they set for themselves.
